Work in Progress: Natural Gardens and Shorelines on the Drawing Board

Here are some of the natural garden and shoreline projects in our pipeline, ready to go in the ground.

From Pit to Picture

I’m delighted to be working on this project. This home was built on a reclaimed sand extraction site which has been rehabilitated into the most wonderful natural setting. I’m putting in the final touches, adding native plants to finish the landscaping.

There are three parts to this project: what I call the “garden”, which will have bands of native plants to enhance the view and bring biodiversity to the site; the woodland edge, where we are smoothing the transition from forest to open land which a huge variety of native shrubs; and a separate planting of moisture-loving plants near the lakeshore.

The Sensory Spiral

There’s something magical about this one: a spiral labyrinth that the homeowner created a couple of decades ago and is now ready for a new lease on life.

With this project I want to show what native plants can do, so I am trying to maximize colour, texture and even scent. The idea is to take people on a journey of discovery.

Pollinator Paradise

I love a good lawn conversion because we’re turning a monoculture into an oasis of biodiversity. This one will maximize pollinator action, which of course has knock-on effects for the rest of nature.

With this design, function and form unite perfectly. There’s blooms throughout the season (great for wildlife, attractive for us), there’s a strong structure of shrubs and grasses (it makes the design legible and the arrangement of the grasses keeps the rest of the plants in check), and there’s pathways so the homeowner can get up close to the garden.
